Class Schedule and Requirements
Prerequisites: intermediate/advanced level of Pilates
Previous teaching experience is helpful, especially if you plan to teach in the future.
*This course is open to anyone who meets the prerequisite and has a desire to learn. Be aware that the local Pilates teaching market is quite full, so if you do plan to teach it will be beneficial to you to have a plan in place regarding future direction.
1. Anatomy & Postural Assessment
Studied on 2 weekends: Saturdays 2:00 – 6:00, Sunday 11:00 – 4:00 (18 hours total). March 20 & 21 and April 24 & 25, 2010. Attendance at both weekends is mandatory unless you have taken a university-level anatomy course.
2. Participation & Observation
36 hours – on your own schedule – logging hours can start March 1. Students must participate in 2 mat classes a week (totaling 24 hours), one class at your own level, and one at a different level (a lower level – 1 or 2). A log of the hours of participation is required. You must also observe at least 12 classes, to a maximum of 24, with a general summary of exercises done in the classes that you observe to be handed in. (These notes will be valuable to you later as a teacher, so we recommend keeping orderly and clear notes). These classes can be in either studio and with any teacher, however it is strongly recommend that you attend one class per week taught by Tracy Friesen. (worth 10%)
3. Theory
Wednesdays 6:30 – 9:30 pm, starting April 7 – once a week – 3 hrs x 12 weeks = 36 hours. We will be studying the Pilates exercises and the theory behind them as it relates to the classical repertoire, plus the Integration expanded repertoire including the use of roller, ball and resistance tools. We will also study the relation to injury prevention and rehabilitation, postural assessment, and teaching techniques / protocols, as well as lesson planning. Attendance and participation worth 10% – no more than 2 classes missed to be able to complete the course.
4. Practical Teaching
Students much teach 8 hours of mat class material to a group of 4 or more (it is recommended that you start these at the mid-point of the course), to be coordinated on your own. Tracy will watch at least one of these classes and give feedback. Class plans and self-evaluation to be handed in. (worth 20%)
5. Exams
Practical and written exams take place on June 27 (Sunday). The written portion of the exam (worth 30%) will take approx. 2 hours so you can either do it before your practical exam or stay after. The practical exam (also worth 30%) involves teaching a 45-minute class to students already versed in Pilates. You will be supplied with a general outline of exercises to cover, and you can create your own flow and preparations for the exercises. Written feedback will be given.
Passing grade is 65% for the whole course.
6. Study Materials
Required text: “Anatomy of Movement” by Blandine Calais-Germain, for the anatomy portion. Tracy will supply her theory manual.
Recommended texts: “Dynamic Alignment Through Imagery” by Eric Franklin. “The Pilates Body” by Brooke Siler. Tracy will also use segments of other texts – specifically “The Stark Reality of Stretching” by David Stark, and “Anatomy of Pilates” by the Physicalmind Institute, as well as “The Trail Guide to the Body” by Andrew Beil.
At the successful completion of this course you will be certified by Integration Pilates Studio, which is a recognized educator by the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA), the major governing body for Pilates worldwide, in an extensive matwork course covering traditional Matwork, Fitness Ball, Fitness Circle, Stability Roller, and Resistance Band (all small Pilates props). To become a member of the PMA, please refer to their website.
Instructor
Tracy Friesen, Owner of Integration Pilates Studios
Tracy has been practicing Pilates since 1991 and has been teaching Pilates since 1997. She originally trained and certified under Vivian Nickels at Body Matrix in Toronto, and has continued her training under various master teachers from around the world. She continues to study many forms of movement, integrating her knowledge into the Studios' unique programs in Pilates –evolved exercise. In addition to Pilates, Tracy has also certified in and teaches Gyrotonic, Thai Yoga massage, and Vinyasa Yoga and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from York University.
Tracy's mission with the Integration Pilates System has been to demystify the traditional repertoire, and to find the links with other movement systems in an effort to find what is universal about developing strength and flexibility from the inside out. This has allowed the Integration Matwork System to become well known for giving clients tools for moving in any environment, and at any stage of physical ability – from rehabilitative to highly athletic. The use of a variety of props and exercise tools has also allowed clients to learn Pilates principles in many different ways – keeping the body and mind engaged and stimulated and allowing those with physical restrictions to fully participate. Integration actively seeks ways to make the Pilates Method accessible and interesting to as many different people as possible. The Integration Matwork DVDs archive the unique system that has evolved over the studios' 10-year history.
